Discipleship Training School (DTS) is an intense season of your life to develop a deep relationship with God, enjoy healthy rhythms of Biblical discipline, gain practical training, cultivate a sustaining faith and a grow a passion for missions in the nations.
It's for the hungry and passionate, those who want to have relationship with God in every area of life, to know and live in the truth of who they are created to be. It’s for those willing to let intentional community disciple you, and launch you out into the wild adventure of life with Jesus — wherever that takes you, bringing transformation in your God-given, sphere of influence, doing more than you imagined.
Come! Spend six months emerged in a missions focused community that loves prayer, worship, the Bible, and telling people about Jesus. This training program is designed to ground you in Biblical truth, see you walk in power of Holy Spirit, mobilized for the Great Commission and be equipped to blaze for Jesus in the most far-flung corners of the world. You will be forever ruined for the “ordinary” life.
The six-month training is in three sections: 3 months of EQUIPPING (Training Phase) based in Kona, Hawaii; followed by 3 months of GOING (Field Assignment) and finishing off with 2 weeks of ACTIVATION (Debrief Phase).
This is the training and equipping stage of the school, lasts 12 weeks and is based in Kona, Hawaii. We bring in inspiring voices from across the body of Christ who are experienced in the subjects they teach on and carry great authority to train us.
Training Phase includes a different topic every week about God and/or Christian disciplines taught in a classroom setting. Expect classes to begin as early as 8 a.m., when we dive into encountering God through worship, teaching and skills training. Lectures, small groups, extended time in the University of the Nations’ Prayer Room and local evangelism frequently take place in the afternoons, evenings and the occasional weekend. We will learn, work, pray, worship and encounter Jesus together. Engage DTS is a full-time program of learning and community life.
YWAM loves and values community life and believes learning is not just in the classroom, but in living together side-by-side, in a live-learn environment.
Single DTS students are housed in dormitory-style rooms during Training Phase and we ask that all DTS students live on the University of the Nations campus. We offer special accommodation on campus for married couples and families
Teaching Topics in Equipping phase may include; character and nature of God, Jesus, Holy Spirit, communication with God, lordship and surrender, Biblical worldview, Biblical study, prayer and worship, revival and reformation, spiritual warfare, identity in Christ, missions and evangelism and many others.
As part of our learning community students also serve in practical ways on the campus daily, which might include serving meals, working on the farm or caring for our grounds.
After Training Phase, students will be sent out to far-flung nations in small teams to make a high impact in communities, applying everything they have learned.
You will spend 10 weeks in a cross-cultural environment daily serving and loving those around you, telling people about Jesus and helping develop relationship with him.
You will be representing Jesus in your daily life, helping meet felt needs of their neighbours, being a community of worship and prayer, helping build the local church, proclaiming the Gospel, explaining how God has changed their lives. We pray for the sick to be healed and develop relationships in the local community.
Every outreach is a unique adventure and our previous outreach teams have ministered in the remote places of the Middle East, South and Central Asia and the Pacific. (Outreach is not optional and is a requirement for completion of DTS.)
Outreach phase provides opportunity to put what you’ve learned into practice and inspire you to GO. It is designed to stretch staff and students, and is not about comfort or convenience but about depending on God being inspired about how you can impact communities and nations.
Check out what your outreach could look like ...
During this portion of the DTS, students and staff come back together in Kona to share and celebrate what God did in the nations through their team.
We unpack the events of the Field Assignment and what we learned on Training Phase. There will be time to process how you can apply the lessons of DTS to the lifestyle you will be entering after graduation.
Engage debrief lasts for two weeks and participation in these two weeks is required to receive a certificate of completion.
